All-Day Seminar October 20 at Garfield Farm: Battle of Gettysburg In-Depth
On Sunday October 20, an all day 8 am – 6 pm seminar, "The Battle of Gettysburg In-Depth", will be given by nationally prominent speaker, Garry Adelman, Chief Historian of the American Battlefield Trust. This event is an immersive, educational experience featuring the 8th Illinois Cavalry Reenactors, 1860s music by local band Last Night's Fun, artifacts, and participant interaction. This rare, one-of-a kind presentation by Adelman, an Illinois native who lives in Maryland, will cover each day of the 1863, July 1-3rd battle. Topics will include battle strategies, regiment formations, key commanders on both sides, enduring myths and folklore, and in particular, Illinois' contribution to the greatest Civil War battle.
Just 85 years after the seemingly impossible dream, the founding of the Untied States, America would witness its greatest threat to that dream, the Civil War. The tragedy and sacrifices made to keep that dream alive are unimaginable today and are so taken for granted. Of all the battles critical to winning that war, the battle of Gettysburg stands out as in its aftermath, President Abraham Lincoln’s 2-minute, 272-word Gettysburg Address still captures the hearts and minds of people around the world. The carnage and victory of that battle will be examined in depth in a once only and first time ever all-day seminar by the acclaimed Adelman.
For 29 years, Adelman has been a licensed guide of the Gettysburg battlefield and has authored, co-authored or edited more than thirty books and articles concerning the Civil War. He is the vice president of the Center for Civil War Photography. He has originated text for wayside exhibits at ten battlefields, has given thousands of battlefield tours at more than 60 sites and has lectured at hundreds of locations across the country including the National Archives, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. He has appeared as a speaker on the BBC, C-Span, Pennsylvania Cable Network, American Heroes Channel, and on HISTORY where he was a chief consultant and talking head on the Emmy Award-winning show Gettysburg (2011) and Blood and Glory: The Civil War in Color (2015).
The day’s presentation will be made in memory of 23 year old James H. Mighell, museum founder Elva Garfield’s uncle who died on March 23,1863 during the western front Vicksburg, MS campaign. A victim of disease, he died on board a hospital ship near Millikens Bend, LA., 3 months and 10 days before the U.S. victories at Gettysburg, July 3rd and at Vicksburg, July 4th. The event will also honor Elva’s grand uncle, Benjamin Franklin Garfield, who enlisted at the age of 54 in 1864 serving as an ambulance driver in Washington D.C
The day is underwritten by a museum donor so most of the admission price will directly benefit the museum. A continental breakfast and all day beverages are included but participants should bring their own lunch. Garfield Farm Museum is a historically intact former prairie farmstead and teamster inn being restored by volunteers as a 1840s working farm.
