News from Garfield Farm |
Calling all children ages eight to eleven to
come to Garfield Farm Museum on Thursday, June 15th, 8:45 am to 11:45
am, to learn and have fun with children's farm chores of old!
Beginning bright and early, children will get to experience 1840s life
on the prairie. They will learn basic farm chores such as feeding
the farm animals and gathering eggs. They will also get a chance
help prepare and cook a historic corn bread like snack and learn some
old-fashioned games. The Children's Morning Chores will also be offered
on July 13th and August 3rd.
Children were a big asset to their parents
before and throughout the 19th century. Since most Americans
lived on farms, everyone both young and old, were needed to help with
daily chores and farm operations. It was not until the late 19th
century that children begin to have more of the childhood we know and
understand today. With the industrial revolution came more
machines to do the jobs and chores that family members and hired farm
help did previously in the century. Also, more people began
moving to the cities during the second half of the 19th century.
Jobs began to open up in cities in the form of factory work and other
big industry work.
Families could make steady money in the cities as apposed to
farming in the country. As a result children's lives became more
regimented with attending school. They also were no longer needed
to help with farm operations and could have more time to have fun and
play.
Today it is hard to imagine the life of a
child in the 1840s but with the help of Garfield Farm Museum it is
possible to get a glimpse of the different life they lead.
Garfield Farm Museum is located 5 miles west of Geneva, IL, off of
Illinois Rt. 38 on Garfield Road. Garfield Farm is a former
historically intact 1840s prairie farmstead and teamster inn that is
being restored as a working 1840s farm.
Reservations are required for 1840s Children?s
Morning Chores and cost is $30. Snack and refreshment included.
