Check Out Garfield Farm Museum's 2013 Calendar
CAMPTON HILLS IL: There's something for everyone in Garfield Farm Museum's
2013 Calendar. As always, the museum strives to educate the public
about its three main themes of history, farming, and the environment through
guided tours, lectures, prairie walks, and other special events.
The calendar starts off with the annual Natural Area
Management Seminar on February 16th. The always popular Antique Apple
Grafting Seminar will be held on March 3rd. In April, those with an interest
in period music can attend "hands on” workshops on Dulcimers, a very unique
type of stringed instrument, on the 7th and 21st. Those interested in a
spring walk through the woods, should sign up for the woodland flower walk
on April 14th. The museum hold's one of its most popular events, the
annual Rare Breed Show on May 19th. The show stresses the need to preserve
rare domesticated animals and features a wide variety of animals exhibited
by members of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.
The summer offers a number of great opportunities to
visit the farm. Walk-in tours will start up again in June on Wednesday and
Sunday afternoons. In June, visitors can also check out various period
demonstrations at the museum's 1840's Day event, now in its 5th year. The
museum will hold three day farm camps in June and July, offering children a
chance to experience farm life in the 19th century. Check out the museum's
website for more details. August will be a busy month. The Antique Tool Show
on August 4th features thousands of tools for sale by members of both the
Mid-West Tool Collectors Association and the Early American Industries
Association. In mid August, the first of two archaeological excavations for
the year will take place on the farm. Let the museum know if any one would
like to observe or help out. The Heirloom Garden Show on August 25th gives
the garden enthusiast the occasion to purchase produce and seeds from local
gardeners and members of the Seed Saver Exchange.
In the fall, there will be lectures on
blacksmithing, historic barns, and the history and development of corn.
There will also be another archaeological excavation in mid September.
Harvest Days on October 6th will be celebrating 32 years this season. The
always-popular event demonstrates activities that took place during the fall
season on an 1840's farm. On December 7th & 8th, the Candlelight
Reception will show how the Garfield's tavern appeared to the weary traveler
during a winter evening. Visitors will also have a chance to check out some
hearthside cooking at the museum's Atwell Burr House. The museum offers
guided tours year round by appointment or on Wednesday and Sundays, June
through September from 1-4 pm. Tours include the 1846 inn, the historic
barns and livestock and gardens upon request.
